Traffic Violations To Earn Negative Points On Driving Licence

The authorities have tried different ways to cut down on accidents and traffic violations, like imposing heavy fines. Unfortunately, these efforts haven't worked, leading to over 170,000 accidents in India each year. To improve road safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is planning to introduce a negative points system for driving licenses nationwide.

This initiative takes inspiration from countries like Australia, the UK, Germany, Brazil, France, and Canada. Its goal is to reduce traffic violations by imposing tougher penalties on repeat offenders. The authorities announced that the new points system will be implemented in the next two months, after the necessary amendments to the law are made.

In the new system, drivers will earn negative points for traffic violations like speeding, running red lights, and driving recklessly. If they accumulate too many points, they could lose their driving license. The system will not only impose penalties but also reward responsible drivers. Good driving habits and encouraging safe driving can earn merit points.

As part of the new system, people who want to renew their driver's license and have committed any driving violations will need to take a mandatory driving test. Right now, there is no requirement for a driving test when renewing a license before it expires.
