Operation Sindoor Live Updates: The Indian armed forces early Wednesday carried out missile attacks on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, including Muridke and Bahawalpur, which are the strongholds of terror groups Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, respectively.
The attacks, which were carried out at 1:44am, were in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district that claimed 26 lives -- 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen -- on April 22.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Defence confirmed hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir "from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed."
"Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution."
The Defence Ministry said India is living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable.
India's strikes come hours before a planned security mock drill across the country for "effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack", across 244 districts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to pursue the perpetrators of the attack and those who took part in its conspiracy to the "ends of the earth" to inflict punishment on them "beyond their imagination".

Why India Named Its Pahalgam Counterstrike Operation Sindoor
Sindoor in Hindi means vermilion, which Hindu women put on their head as a symbol of marriage. The name of the operation captures the loss of these women, whose partners were brutally killed in front of their eyes in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
An image put out by the Indian Army has Operation Sindoor written in block letters. One 'O' in Sindoor is a bowl of vermilion. Some of it has spilled over, symbolising the ruthlessness that snatched away the life partners of 25 women. The caption read: "Justice is served. Jai Hind."
Operation Sindoor: SCALP And HAMMER: The Weapons Used In Operation Sindoor To Hit Terror Sites
SCALP (Storm Shadow): The SCALP missile, also known as Storm Shadow, is a long-range, air-launched cruise missile with a range exceeding 250 kilometres and designed for deep-strike capabilities.
HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range): The HAMMER smart bomb was used to strike hardened infrastructure such as reinforced bunkers and multi-storey buildings used as training and logistical centres by LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The HAMMER is a precision-guided, standoff munition capable of striking targets at ranges of 50-70 kilometres, depending on launch altitude.
Loitering Munitions: Also known as "kamikaze drones," loitering munitions were deployed for surveillance, target acquisition, and terminal strike roles. These drone systems hover over target areas and either autonomously or under remote control identify and eliminate threats.

Missiles Land, Then Orange Fireball: First Visuals Of Operation Sindoor
The government has shared visuals, sourced from Pakistani social media accounts, of 'Operation Sindoor' - the tri-services overnight precision strike on nine terrorist camps in Pak and Pak-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were India's first military response to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed at a tourist hotspot.
In one video, a crowd of people, many on bikes, is gathered on a busy road. It is the middle of the night but, on the horizon, there is a large orange glow and smoke can be seen in the distance.
Seconds later, there is a whistling sound and a massive detonation as an Indian missile, possibly either the air-launched, long-range SCALP or the Hammer, a stand-off smart bomb, hits one of its targets. The impact of the strike causes the man filming the video to stagger back.
A large and bright orange fireball follows, sending plumes of acrid smoke mushrooming out in all directions, and people can be heard praying in Arabic and shouting in panic.
Another video is from the dashboard of car as it drives past police check posts.
The driver can be heard conversing with a passenger. And just as one person utters the word 'bomb', a second explosion and deadly orange fireball can be seen in the distance.

In the early hours of Wednesday, India executed a coordinated, multi-branch military operation named Operation Sindoor, striking nine terrorist-linked locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). On Balakot Strike List, 2 Operation Sindoor Targets. Why They Were Dropped
Two of the key targets in "Operation Sindoor" -- precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan by the army and air force early today -- were on the army radar five years ago when the Balakot strikes happened, sources said. But the army let it pass since strikes on them would have been considered an act of aggression.
Sources said Pakistan's Bahawalpur and Kotli, were considered as options during the air strikes at Balakot - made in retaliation against the massive terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.
Bahawalpur is the headquarters of Jaish-e Mohammad.

Operation Sindoor Live Updates: The Significance Of India's Strike On Muridke In Pakistan
India's calibrated military response to the Pahalgam terror attack included a strike on Muridke in Pakistan's Punjab, which is home to the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and is known as the "terror nursery" of Pakistan.
The Hafiz Saeed-led terror outfit is believed to be behind the April 22 attack in Baisaran near Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which 26 people, most of whom were tourists, were killed.
The headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and its front organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawa in Muridke is spread over spread over approximately 200 acres, including mosques, schools, hospitals, farms, and a terror training camp.

When Has India Attacked Pakistan Earlier?
In 2016, India carried out precision surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control in PoK, almost 10 days after the Uri attacks in which four Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists from Pakistan entered a brigade headquarters and killed 16 soldiers.
On February 14, 2019, a vehicle-borne suicide bomber from JeM targeted a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Pulwama, killing 40 soldiers. India responded with force, and the Indian Air Force struck terror camps in Balakot, across the international border in Pakistan. This was the first time since the 1971 war, the IAF crossed the international border for military action.
It was followed by Pakistan scrambling jets, and in an aerial dogfight, the Air Force's MiG-21, piloted by Wing Commander Abhinandan, shot down a superior US-made fourth-generation F-16 fighter aircraft.
Wing Commander Abhinandan was captured by Pakistan but was released a few days later.

NSA Ajit Doval Speaks With US Secretary Of State After India Attacks Pakistan Terror Bases
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio "shortly after" India early Wednesday carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and briefed him on the actions taken, the Indian Embassy in Washington DC said.
"India's actions have been focused and precise. They were measured, responsible and designed to be non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets have been hit. Only known terror camps were targeted," a press release from the Embassy of India, Washington DC said.
It said that "shortly after the strikes," NSA Doval spoke with US NSA and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and "briefed him on the actions taken".

Pakistan Army Says India Launches Air Strikes, Vows To Respond
The Pakistan Army said that India launched air strikes against the country early Wednesday, vowing to respond to the attack.
Army spokesman Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that missiles fired by India targeted Kotli and Muzaffarabad in PoK and Bahawalpur in Punjab province.
Some time ago, India launched air strikes on the Subhanullah mosque in Bahwalpur's Ahmed East area, Kotli and Muzaffarabad at three places from the air, he told ARY News channel, according to news agency PTI.
"Let me say it unequivocally: Pakistan will respond to this at a time and place of its own choosing. This heinous provocation will not go unanswered," he said.
