Operation Sindoor Live Updates: The Indian armed forces thwarted fresh attempts by the Pakistani military to target northern and western cities using drones and missiles on Thursday evening, sources said, adding that at least eight missiles have been brought down so far. All airports are on alert in response to heightened security concerns.

The drone and missile attacks by the neighbouring country were reported in Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, prompting authorities to activate the defence systems, sirens and enforce a complete blackout in most areas. Sources said a Pakistan F-16 was shot down by the Indian forces although an official confirmation is awaited.

The developments came hours after India said it had foiled Pakistan's attempts to engage a number of military targets across 15 cities in northern and western India using drones and missiles on Thursday night. A Pakistani air defence system in Lahore was also destroyed.

Early on Wednesday, India unleashed 24 missiles in 25 minutes on nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag that claimed 26 lives on April 22. Security drills were also held for "effective civil defence in the event of a hostile attack" across 244 districts in the country.

Lahore Anti-Aircraft Site Hit. NDTV Explains 'Suppression Of Enemy Air Defence'

Formally called Suppression of Enemy Air Defence, or SEAD, it essentially means disrupting and destroying enemy air defence systems that could be used to shoot down Indian aircraft. Sometimes, it goes by the acronym DEAD to mean Destruction of Enemy Air Defence.

The US is an experienced hand in SEAD missions.

"The criticality of SEAD/DEAD - most importantly the negating of the surface-to-air missile threat - is really a basic tenet in warfare," says Mike Stuart, Director of Advanced Programs Business Development at the US aerospace and defence firm Northrop Grumman.

"That means freedom of maneuver on the battlefield, and without the freedom of maneuver you're isolated and you can't engage when you want to engage," says Mr Stuart.

In its February 17, 2020, judgement, the top court said that absolute exclusion of women from all positions, except staff assignments, in the Army was indefensible and their blanket non-consideration for command appointments without any justification cannot be sustained in law.

The top court, which allowed Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers in the Army, said an absolute prohibition of women Short Service Commission (SSC) officers to obtain anything but staff appointments evidently did not fulfil the purpose of granting PC as a means of career advancement in the Army.

The top court also referred to the distinctions achieved by women officers, and put out an example of Colonel Qureshi's achievements.

"Any Attack On Military Targets...": Why India Struck Pak Air Defence Today

When India struck 24 terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) under Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, it ensured that no military installation was targeted. Islamabad's response, however, was escalatory as it tried to strike multiple military targets in northern and western India. India retaliated and struck air defence radars at several locations in Pakistan, neutralising one at Lahore.

The government's official statement on the developments late last night says that the Operation Sindoor airstrikes on the terror infrastructure of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed were "focused, measured and non-escalatory". "It was specifically mentioned that Pakistani military establishments had not been targeted. It was also reiterated that any attack on military targets in India will invite a suitable response," it said.

But late last night, Pakistan tried to target military targets in Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, with drones and missiles.

"These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks.

Pakistan has increased the intensity of its unprovoked firing across the Line of Control using Mortars and heavy calibre artillery in areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir. Today morning Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. Indian response has been in the same domain with same intensity as Pakistan. When Supreme Court Praised Colonel Sofiya Qureshi Who Co-Led Operation Sindoor Briefing

While ruling in favour of granting Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers in the Indian Army, the Supreme Court in 2020 had acknowledged the achievements of Colonel Sofia Qureshi, one of the two women officers who briefed the media on 'Operation Sindoor' on Wednesday.

In its February 17, 2020, judgement, the top court said that absolute exclusion of women from all positions, except staff assignments, in the Army was indefensible and their blanket non-consideration for command appointments without any justification cannot be sustained in law.

The top court referred to the distinctions achieved by women officers, and put out an example of Colonel Qureshi's achievements.

After India's Operation Sindoor, Flood Of Misinformation From Pakistan

In the aftermath of India's military strikes on nine identified terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor, a wave of misinformation has emerged from Pakistani media and government-affiliated sources.

In the hours following Operation Sindoor, numerous Pakistani government-linked media channels and social media accounts began circulating unverified claims, many of which have been flagged as misinformation by independent analysts and fact-checkers.

Several posts falsely claimed that Pakistan had retaliated by launching missile strikes at 15 locations inside India. Others claimed that Srinagar Airbase had been hit by the Pakistan Air Force and that an Indian Army Brigade Headquarters had been destroyed.

Operation Sindoor Live Updates: Pakistan Shuts Down Airspace, Plans To Hit Back After India's Precision Strikes

Pakistan, in disbelief and distress after Indian armed forces missiles pummeled multiple terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as deep inside Pakistan, has decided to close down its airspace entirely.

So far, Pakistan had closed its airspace only for flights that are owned, leased, or operated by Indian carriers, but after India's precision strikes, Islamabad and Rawalpindi (Pak Army headquarters) have announced a total closure of the country's airspace for all countries, including its own civilian planes. Only some essential flights are reportedly being permitted.

The order, issued by Pakistan's aviation authority, states that Pakistan is now a no-fly zone for the next 48 hours. While Pakistan has called the move a precautionary measure, the country has vowed to retaliate. It must be noted that India's kinetic action against Pakistan was a response to Pakistan's links to cross-border terrorism which resulted in the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. The attack was religiously-motivated, and came days after an inflammatory and communal speech by Pak Army chief Asim Munir.

Opinion By Shashi Tharoor | Operation Sindoor: What Can India Expect From The World's Reactions?

As the world takes in the news of last night's Indian military operation against Pakistan, following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the death of 26 tourists, the question arises: What can we expect from the world? How will the international reaction to the emotively-named 'Operation Sindoor' play out?

The first international responses have been largely predictable. United States President Donald Trump termed the situation a "shame" and hoped it would end "very quickly". Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to engage with both Indian and Pakistani leadership for a peaceful resolution. The US has also conveyed that it has been in touch with both nations in recent days, urging de-escalation, and that these efforts will increase. Click here to read more

"The Indian armed forces have said that they only targeted terrorist camps and not Pakistani military facilities," the anchor said. India carried out missile strikes on nine terror targets, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold of Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba's base in Muridke.

Tarah tried to deny the fact, saying, "Let me make it very clear, there are no terrorist camps in Pakistan. Pakistan is a victim of terrorism. We are fighting terrorism on our western borders. Operation Sindoor Live Updates: "Where Will We Go", Ask Uri Locals After Heavy Pakistan Shelling

In the village of Salamabad, located barely ten kilometres from the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the aftermath of recent artillery fire from across the border paints a grim picture. Two civilian homes have been obliterated by Pakistani shelling, with four people injured in the incident, including two children. All four have been evacuated to the district hospital in Baramulla, approximately 40 kilometres away.

A dense cloud of smoke still hangs over the ruins, evidence of fires still smouldering long after the shells landed. The signs of artillery impact are clear. Shrapnel has torn through metal rooftops and fragmented concrete walls. NDTV, speaking to locals on the ground, learned that at least one shell appeared to have exploded in the air, spreading white-hot metal shards in all directions. Twisted utensils, collapsed roofs, and damaged interiors, the destruction of these houses is near-total.

"Four people live in this house," said an elderly man, pointing at charred ruins. "Two children, a 13-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, were injured when, around 2 am, a Pakistani artillery shell fell on the house."

This damage occurred in a civilian settlement with no military presence. Local residents reiterated that the nearest army brigade is several kilometres behind the site of the shelling. "We are not soldiers. We are farmers. We have families here," one elderly villager said. "Where will we go?"

Why Operation Sindoor Is Unlike Any Mission India Has Ever Carried Out

Unlike the 2016 Uri surgical strikes, 2019 Balakot airstrikes, or other past Indian operations, which were limited in scale and scope, Operation Sindoor was technologically robust, expansive and unlike any mission India has ever carried out. The move to strike deep into Pakistan-occupied territory revealed one thing: a departure from prior doctrine.

Operation Sindoor was not only the most expansive cross-border strike conducted by India since the Balakot operation, but also represented an evolution in India's strategic posture.

"The sheer scale of militant loss sent a strong message to terrorist networks and their handlers. India now reserves the right to strike preemptively, and no location is beyond reach," a government source said.

She said the attackers committed the crime without any fear and they should also be punished in the same way.

During an appearance on Sky News, Tarar alleged that the Indian ministry targeted civilian areas - a claim that was dismantled by Hakim.

Operation Sindoor, India's swift and surgical counterstrike after the Pahalgam terror attack, was the result of detailed planning by the government and the security establishment over the past two weeks. The goal was to break the backbone of the terror outfits operating from Pakistan, while ensuring no damage to military installations and keeping civilian casualties to a minimum. The result was a calibrated strike against premises linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. The 25-minute attack eliminated 70 terrorists and left 60 others injured.

Akshardham, Uri, Pulwama, Pahalgam: Op Sindoor Is India's 'No More' Message

India sent out a "no more" message against terror at the government briefing hours after Operation Sindoor, the measured, expansive and swift counterstrike against nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack.

At the onset of the press briefing, a short video, giving a flashback of the heinous terror attacks in India in the past decade was played.

It included the 2001 Parliament attack, the 2002 attack on Gujarat's Aksharadham Temple, the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the attacks in Uri and Pulwama and the Pahalgam tragedy.

"More than 350 Indian civilians have succumbed to cross-border terrorism in the past decade and 800 injured in these dastardly acts of violence. Over 600 Security personnel have laid down their lives and more than 1,400 injured while protecting the Nation from this scourge of cross border terrorism," a message said. It then added, "...No More", followed by "Operation Sindoor".

Operation Sindoor: How India Destroyed 9 Terror Camps In 25 Minutes

It took just 25 minutes for India to unleash 24 missiles that struck nine terror camps and killed 70 terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes, which lasted from 1:05 AM to 1:30 AM on May 7, were carried out jointly by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force under the codename Operation Sindoor.

At a press briefing in New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, flanked by Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, said the operation was a "measured and proportionate" response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. That assault, attributed to Pakistan-based terror groups, claimed the lives of 26 people, including one Nepali national, and left many others injured.

At India's Briefing On Operation Sindoor, 2 Women Officers Take Lead

India's briefing on 'Operation Sindoor' today gave a strong and significant message as two women officers - Colonel Sofiya Qureshi (L) and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh (R) - led it, shedding light on the April 22 Pahalagam terror attack in which 26 people died.

The choice of women officers leading the briefing is powerful as it reflects the mark of strength and sacrifice. It is also symbolic to India's anti-terror operation 'Sindoor' - as a way of honouring those women widowed after terrorists killed men in the Pahalgam attack.

Pakistan's Response Not Proportionate: J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah As 10 Killed In Pak Firing

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called Pakistan's 'arbitrary and indiscriminate firing response' to India "anything but proportionate" - even as Indian officials ensured no military and civilian targets were hit.
"It was expected that India would use its right to respond in an appropriate and proportional way. I think the Government of India and the Indian defence forces have gone out of their way to ensure that no military and civilian targets were hit in Pakistan. They have only hit terror bases and launch pads. Unfortunately, the response has been anything but proportionate," Mr Abdullah said after he held a meeting to assess the security and preparedness along the border and Line of Control areas.

Operation Sindoor, India Pakistan: What Wives Of Pahalgam Massacre Victims Said About Operation Sindoor

India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, targeting at least nine "terrorist infrastructure" locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). The operation was named 'Sindoor', the red vermilion traditionally worn by married Hindu women.

This comes weeks after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people. The attackers separated men from women, executed the men, and spared the women, leaving them to relay the incident to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Go, tell Modi," said one of the terrorists after shooting a man dead in front of his wife.

The women who lost their husbands in the Pahalgam incident have responded to the operation.

"It's a befitting reply after the way those terrorists erased the vermilion of our daughters," said Pragati Jagdale, widow of Santosh Jagdale, in a statement to news agency ANI. "On hearing the name of this operation, I got tears in my eyes. I sincerely thank the government," she said.
